THONET, the traditional German company, will present itself from 8-11 March 2017 at Design Shanghai 2017 in the heart of the Chinese metropolis. At Contemporary Hall (booth CG-219), the company will exhibit a cross-section of its unique craftsmanship, “made in Germany” since 1819. The exhibited furniture from the Lounge, Dining, Office and Outdoor segments, like the company, represent almost 200 years of outstanding furniture history: from the world-famous heritage pieces – the path breaking designs by company founder Michael Thonet from the 19th century and the iconic tubular steel models by renowned Bauhaus architects – to contemporary designs. The company headquartered in Frankenberg/Eder (Germany) thus offers an insight into its comprehensive portfolio, which has always stood for the highest quality, innovation and iconic design. Parallel with Design Shanghai, THONET will once more be a guest at the Festival of Design 2017 (03/06-04/02), initiated by “Design Commune by Design Republic”.
Always reinterpreting the big heritage pieces and making them suitable for the future – THONET manages this feat with contemporary collections of its classics: at the Design Shanghai booth, selected bentwood icons are exhibited, including the legendary Vienna Coffee House Chair 214 (Michael Thonet, 1859) and the chair 209 (Gebrüder Thonet, 1900) in the natural “Pure Materials” edition. The famous seating furniture together with the solid dining table 1060 (Jorre van Ast, 2016), whose design is also characterised by bentwood elements, form a harmonious ensemble.
The tubular steel designs from the Bauhaus era, which, in addition to the then revolutionary bentwood furniture, represent the second important milestone in the history of THONET, are currently presented in a version suitable for the outdoors: specially selected designs including chair S 35 (Marcel Breuer, 1929) and the cantilever chairs S 33 (Mart Stam, 1926) and S 533 (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1927) are ready for use on the terrace, in gardens or on rooftops in “THONET All Seasons” versions. Available in diverse versions, they offer plenty of possibilities for individualisation and numerous possibilities for combination.
The perfected combination possibilities of THONET furniture in different environments such as living or break out areas are demonstrated by an inviting lounge at the booth: recent designs, including the striking armchair 808 (Formstelle, 2015) and the lounge range S 830 (THONET Design Team: Emilia Becker, 2016), form a harmonious unit with the classic tubular steel designs by Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The residential work segment environment is another focus: THONET presents the compact tubular steel desk S 1200 (THONET Design Team: Randolf Schott, 2014) alongside various seating furniture models for the conferencing segment such as the conference chair range S 95 (THONET Design Team: Randolf Schott, 2014).
In addition to its presentation at Design Shanghai, THONET is also participating in the “Festival of Design 2017” organised by “Design Commune by Design Republic”. As part of the exhibition “The Dwelling- How to live?”, THONET presents a one cubic metre sea shipping box in which 36 of the famous Vienna Coffee House Chairs 214 were exported 150 years ago. The first product of its kind, the chair 214 could be completely knocked down and packed flat. By the beginning of the 20th century, THONET had already sold over 50 million copies of this model. Even at the very beginning of the corporate history, it was already becoming evident how ingeniously THONET combined outstanding design with sophisticated supply chain management. Other important originals will also be in the spotlight at the festival, including the tubular steel cantilever chair S 64 by Marcel Breuer in a noble special edition covered with a Kvadrat fabric designed by Raf Simons. Philipp Thonet, member of the fifth generation of the THONET family, will represent the company on site as a brand ambassador.
